Welcome to Room 1

Room 1 is where most children at Mararoa complete their primary school education and are prepared for the next stage in life's learning journey. Children in Room 1 range from Year 5 to Year 8. They are taught from  Mondays to Wednesdays by Ms Baigent (school principal), and on Thursdays and Fridays by Mrs Templer.

Room 1 - extending learning

In Room 1, we cater for learners from years 5 to 8. Building on the knowledge and skills developed in rooms 2 and 3, children enter Room 1 excited about the challenges and leadership opportunities available to them. As in the lower school, the emphasis in the classroom is on developing and extending literacy and numeracy skills. A key difference is the degree to which the children are expected to participate in the setting of their own academic goals and assessments of their own progress.

In Room 1, the children are encouraged to develop specific leadership skills though a variety of routine school-based and outside the classroom experiences. These include, organising and leading the weekly assemblies, leading whole school fitness activities and for the Year 8 children, attending the annual Young Leader's Conference.

On Tuesday, the 7th of February, Room 1 had tennis coaching with Mr Whyte for an hour. This session we worked on our forehand hits. We played lots of different games to improve our forehand hits.
