Welcome to room 3

Hi and welcome to room 3! I am Sue Ibbotson the room 3 class teacher and also the reading recovery teacher for the school. Room 3 is where most children at Mararoa begin their learning journey, with programmes for both new entrants and year 1 students.

Solid start to the early years

We are fortunate at Mararoa to be able to offer small class sizes, which means that I can work with individual children and address their particular needs within the classroom (especially important at this early stage in their learning). Having a supportive school community, the children also benefit from regular contact with numerous volunteer reading assistants. This means that all of the children in Room 3 have the opportunity to read to an adult and be read to several times each week.

The focus in our classroom is definitely on developing good early literacy and numeracy skills and the bulk of our time is spent on these curriculum areas. We want learning to be fun and so we often find ways to develop our knowledge and skills through practical hands-on activities eg. cooking, physical activities, music and art.

Rugby World Cup

155 The Rugby World Cup inspired Room 3 children to create some amazing portraits of our All Blacks. Look out for these on display at Te Anau's Spring Flower Show.

The Wilderness

153 The Wilderness is a place we all pass by regularly on our way to and from school. Most of us had never stopped, until the day we explored it with Catherine.

Bird Park

152 While we were in Te Anau, we went to the Bird Park. When we got there, Catherine let us go into the Takahe enclosure.

Special Room 3 Systems

  • Children in Room 3 are allowed to eat unlimited fruit and vegetables from home whilst they are working in the classroom.
  • Shoes are always taken off in our classroom. If children want to, they can wear slippers inside.
  • Homework is sent home each day. This usually consists of reading books, a letter-sound activity and a Kiwi-Phonics activity. Occasionally another task will be set. Please try to read with your child each day, but if they are tired, do not feel that they must complete all of the tasks.
