Where Leaders Are Made

At Mararoa School, leadership isn’t just a badge—it’s something our students live every day.

In our small rural school, every student is seen, known, and given the chance to step up. Our older students don’t wait to be asked—they guide, support, and stand alongside our younger learners. They lead on the playground, in the classroom, and out in our community. It’s real, it’s visible, and it matters.

Here, leadership is built through experience—by giving things a go, taking responsibility, and learning that your actions make a difference to others. Our students grow into capable, grounded young people who know how to contribute, connect, and lead with confidence.

This is where that journey begins.

William Pike Challenge

This year, we are excited to introduce the William Pike Challenge to our Year 7 & 8 students as part of our leadership programme at Mararoa School.

The challenge is all about giving things a go and making the most of the opportunities around us here in our rural community. Through a mix of outdoor adventures, community service, and passion projects, our students build confidence, resilience, and independence while learning to step outside their comfort zones.

In a small rural school, leadership looks like pitching in, supporting others, and being willing to try something new. The William Pike Challenge reflects these values, encouraging our students to take ownership of their learning and contribute positively to their school and community.

We’re looking forward to seeing our students grow, challenge themselves, and discover just what they’re capable of.

Science Badges

Our Leadership Programme encourages students to explore their interests, challenge themselves, and take ownership of their learning. One exciting opportunity available from year 5 onwards is the national Science Badge Programme.

Science Badges are designed to spark curiosity and build confidence through a wide range of practical and research-based science activities. Students choose a topic that interests them, complete activities independently, and work towards earning an official enamelled Science Badge and certificate.

Students can choose from a variety of science topics, including: Astronomy, Animals, Electronics, Chemistry, Flight, Weather, Antarctic Science, Climate Change, Wool Science, and many more.

Recognition and Achievement

Students receive an official science badge and certificate for every completed topic. Students who complete multiple badges can also earn special Star Awards:

  • Bronze Star = 5 badges

  • Silver Star = 10 badges

  • Gold Star = 15 badges

  • Platinum Star = 30 badges

These awards recognise long-term commitment, curiosity, and excellence in scientific learning.

Science Badges are a fantastic way for students to follow their passions, explore real-world science topics, and develop independent learning habits. They fit perfectly within our leadership philosophy of encouraging students to be motivated, capable, and lifelong learners.
