Principal's message
Melodie Gage-Witham (Mrs G-W) – Principal
Kia ora & Welcome
Having taught across a number of schools throughout Southland, I can genuinely say it is a privilege to serve as Principal of Mararoa School. This is not just a place of learning — it is a place that feels like home.
From the moment I arrived, what stood out was the strength of connection. Mararoa is intentionally small, proudly rural, and deeply connected. Our students are known as individuals, our families are welcomed as partners, and our small school community works together in a way that is becoming increasingly rare, yet incredibly powerful.
For me, Mararoa represents what education should be. It is a place where children are given space — space to grow, to take risks, to make mistakes, and to discover who they are. It is a place where relationships sit at the heart of everything we do, and where every child is supported to lead, contribute, and succeed in their own way.
Our Teaching Staff and Support Staff are dedicated, reflective, and deeply committed to their craft. They work tirelessly to ensure learning is purposeful, engaging, and responsive to each child. Alongside this, our students learn the importance of respect — for themselves, for others, and for the environment — and they carry this with pride in all aspects of school life.
I feel incredibly fortunate to lead a school where the values are lived, not just spoken, and where the community stands behind its children. Mararoa is a special place, and it is an honour to be part of each child’s journey.
