A Doubtful Tour with Anya Forest

August 02, 2021 -

On Monday 2 August the Hoiho Class had the opportunity to step back in history with author Anya Forest - Fiordland Fables as we got to visit locations and meet real-life characters from our class novel A Doubtful Detour.
The first stop on our mystery tour was the Manapouri Lakeview Motor Inn where Paul spoke of his time at the Manapouri Power Station and explained the diagrams and dials found in the pub.
Next local pilot Kylie from Wings and Water discussed her passion for climbing, the equipment you need and all of the amazing places she had visited.
Anya then shared artefacts and items that inspired her writing of the two novels, both set in the Fiordland wilderness.
After a yummy morning tea, we made our way to Murrells Grand View House and learnt more about the history of the Murrell family. One of the original tourist providers, and also helping to set the path for tramping in the area. Aaron Nicholson was great at answering questions about the changes to the building and the site over the past 130 years.
The afternoon involved a trip to Lake Te Anau to explore two of the Real Journeys boats. We got to see the engine room of the Luminosa as well as take a trip on the Pilgrim built in 1910.
We would like to give a huge thank you to Anya for bringing her book to life for us and letting us experience the history of our own backyard with excitement.
Thank you to all of those that came to speak to the students today and answered their many questions.
